What is limestone?

Limestone

Limestone, which is also confused with tramite, is a limestone and sedimentary stone. Limestone is a building stone used for interior decoration. Limestone, if covered with nano materials, will be able to compete with white travertine stones. Limestone is one of the first stones used by humans. This rock has been called the youngest sedimentary rock because its formation time is shorter compared to other sedimentary rocks.

How to form limestone

Limestone is a calcareous and sedimentary rock and it is formed from the mineral kelist. This stone is lightweight and does not weigh much compared to marble and marble stones.

Argonite, dolomite, quartz, feldspar, hematite and limonite are other materials that contribute to the formation of this stone. Skeletons called fossils can be seen in the structure of these stones. These stones are created in marine environments, especially shallow seas, where the temperature, concentration and salinity of sea water affect this stone.

Characteristics of limestone

  • Limestone has a smooth surface.
  • The absorption of water in limestone is very high, and according to the progress of science, the limestone stones are nanosized, which has made this stone resistant to water absorption.
  • Limestones have a bright color that creates a pleasant atmosphere when used in different parts of the building.
  • Limestones do not have good wear and erosion resistance.
  • Due to its low strength, it may be easily crushed.
  • Limestone is crushed by hitting sharp objects.

Limestone applications

Limestone stones are not a suitable choice for exterior facades of buildings and it is better to use this stone in open spaces. Another problem with limestone is the high water absorption and low erosion resistance of this stone, which has caused this stone to not be used in places where traffic is high and there is a lot of flooding.

Now let’s look at some of the uses of this stone:

  • Flooring and stairs
  • The floor of the parking lot and its walls
  • Staircase walls
  • The frame around the elevator
  • Around the windows
  • The walls of the stairs
  • Decorations
  • Explicit construction
  • statues

Advantages and disadvantages of limestone

The advantages of limestone include the following:

  • Uniform surface is the most important advantage of limestone. The use of uniform and smooth stone in the facade of the building makes the space twice as beautiful.
  • The reasonable price of limestone is another advantage of this stone. It is very economical to use this stone in large construction projects.
  • The big price difference with travertine stone and its easier cutting is one of the advantages of limestone.
  • The lighter weight of limestone compared to travertine is one of the positive features of this stone.
  • Ensuring the health of the stone in terms of not having cracks and streaks is another advantage of limestone.
  •  The height and height of Limestone is another advantage of this stone.

The disadvantages of limestone include the following:

  • Limestones have high water absorption.
  • Limestones have little resistance to pressure.
  • Limestones absorb moisture easily.
  • Limestones are much harder to cut than stones like marble.
  • Limestones may bend and change size after cutting due to high absorption.
  • This stone cannot be used in the northern cities of the country due to moisture absorption.
  • The lack of resistance of limestone against erosion is one of the disadvantages of this stone.
  • The high stainability of this stone is one of the biggest defects of this stone.

Limestone mines

The cities of Islamabad Kermanshah, Semiram Isfahan and Mahmoudabad Isfahan are among the most important limestone mining mines.

Also, the cities of Mahabad, Bozhan, Gohra, Bukan and Maroodasht in Fars province are among the other mines that extract limestone.

The price of limestone

Like other building stones, several factors are involved in the price of limestone, which include:

  • The quality of the stone (the higher the quality, the higher the price)
  • The color and design of the stone (the lighter and more uniform the limestone is, the price will increase)
  • The porosity of the stone (the lower the density of the stone and its internal cavities, the higher the price will be)
  • Stone dimensions (the larger the size of a stone, the higher its production cost)
  • Type of preparation
  • processing
  • amount of polish
  • Package type
  • Transportation method
  • The quality of resin and lace behind the stone
  • The thickness of the rock
  • The amount of sub

Comparing limestone with marble

  • Limestone takes less time to form, but marble, which is formed from deposits of calcareous minerals, takes longer to form.
  • The costs of transportation and installation are higher in marble than in limestone.
  • Marble stones are mostly used in external facades and limestone stones are mostly used in internal facades.
  • Marble is more resistant to weather changes than limestone.
  • Marble is made of lime and has more variety than limestone, but limestone is only available in white and cream.

Comparing limestone with marble

  • Marble stones are more diverse than limestone stones.
  • The costs of transportation and installation are higher in marble stones than in limestone.
  • Marble is more resistant to weather changes than limestone.
  • Marble has great polishability and in other words, it has a good polish, but Limestone is not like that.

Types of limestone

There are different types of limestone, which we will introduce below:

Marvdasht Limestone

This stone is mined in Morodasht city, which is located in the north of Shiraz city. Marvdasht limestone has a white background. The surface of this stone is very smooth and uniform. The application of this stone is in the interior of the building, the wall of the staircase and parking lot, stone volumes and decorative stone artifacts.

Mahabad Limestone

Mahabad Limestone is extracted in Mahabad city of West Azarbaijan province. This stone has a colored background. The application of this stone is in the internal walls and facade of the building, especially the sub-parts of the building, because this stone has no resistance against factors such as weathering and sunlight.

Gemstone Limestone

Gemstone limestone is mined in the mines of Khorram Abad, which is located in Lorestan province. The background color of this stone is light cream-white, and brown streaks can be seen in the weaker varieties of this stone. This stone is also known and used in Europe and America. The application of this stone is in the inner wall of the building, interior decoration, stairs and corridors.

Buchan Limestone

Bukan Limestone is mined in Bukan city, which is located in West Azarbaijan province, and has a white and cream background, and yellow grains and lines can be seen on their surface. This stone is used in the interior and exterior of the building. Bukan Limestone is also used in making stone artefacts such as Sarahi and statue.

Kermanshah limestone

Kermanshah Limestone, which is similar to Islamabad Limestone and Vanak Limestone, is mined in Kermanshah province and has a light cream-white background. This stone is used in the interior walls of the building that are not exposed to moisture.
